Hundreds of Sportspeople Come Together for Colorado Sportsmen’s Day at the Capitol

Legislators, particularly those with a passion for our shared outdoor pursuits, are typically flooded each day with opposition to and attacks against the things they do. Events that bring sportsmen and women together with legislators to celebrate our hunting, fishing, trapping, and shooting traditions in a positive environment are an effective way to not only educate them about our beliefs but also to show them that we’re engaged, and we stick together as residents and voters.

 

More than $37 Million in Conservation Funding Protected in Nebraska as Legislative Session Concludes

The Nebraska legislative session saw its fair share of legislation that would ultimately have negative impacts on the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission funding. There were multiple bills aimed at offering free and discounted licenses and a bill to divert millions of dollars away from Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. CSF successfully engaged in opposition to these bills and offered amendments to uphold the American System of Conservation Funding.

UPDATE: Maine Lawmakers Pass 72-Hour Wait Period on Firearms Transfers

Introduced on February 28, 2024, and passed along party lines on April 17, 2024, Maine Legislative Docket 2238 (LD 2238) imposes a minimum three-day waiting period on the transferring of a firearm. Through implementing a delay in the transfer of a firearm, LD 2238 creates a uniquely biased hurdle on the hunting and sport shooting communities – a barrier levied on no other outdoor user experience if signed into law.

Legislation to Protect Conservation Funding in Louisiana Advances

On March 27, the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses Executive Council Member and Louisiana Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus (Caucus) Co-Chair Representative Jerome Zeringue filed HB 795, which would provide the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) reimbursement of revenue reductions, through the State General Fund, resulting from free and discounted recreational hunting and fishing licenses created by the legislature.

Habitat is the driving force behind healthy fish and wildlife populations. At a time when fish and wildlife habitats across the nation continue to become fragmented and degraded, the America’s Wildlife Habitat Conservation Act authorizes funding to conserve species before more costly measures are necessary. This legislation also codifies existing partnerships and strategies to conserve fish and wildlife habitat while simultaneously creating new, innovative solutions to better address habitat conservation.
